In this video, meet Oliver Angelil, Data Scientist in Residence at Ishango.ai and Dr. Charles Lebon Mberi Kimpolo, Director at African Institute of Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) as they share their passion for education and employment.
Ishango.ai is the bridge between Africa’s top data science talent and global business. They run a fully funded Data Science fellowship for top graduates across Africa, building their technical and professional skills by providing them with real world experience. Ishango.ai fellows work remotely on projects for international companies, building data-driven solutions to various business problems.
In September 2021, Ishango.ai working in partnership with AIMS, hosted the first cohort of 14 Fellows in Kigali, Rwanda. The fellows, 50% of whom were women, delivered projects for 6 international partner companies, contributing to a diverse set of business solutions within areas of financial services, healthcare, agriculture & marketing. Working alongside industry experts, fellows developed their technical and professional skills whilst gaining experience working within an international team. This was complemented by weekly expert sessions where experienced data scientists from around the world shared their expertise with fellows. Fellows also received dedicated technical support from our data scientist in residence as well as 1-1 soft skills coaching to develop their presentation skills.
The work of the fellows resulted in tangible and actionable contributions with some partner companies implementing their work into the production line and other partner companies opting to extend the contract with their Ishango.ai fellows. Next year we intend to build on the successes of this first cohort, expanding to running two fellowship programmes and welcoming more Ishango.ai fellows and partner companies.
